F.I.V.E, also known as Fear Increases Violent Emotion, is the soon to be released fifth album for Italy’s darkwave group, Christine Plays Viola. Massimo Ciampani (vocals), FabrizioGiampietro (guitar), MarcoDiIanni (bass guitar) and GianlucaOrsini (drums) have dropped the single “MyRedemption” as your first taste for the new album.
The deep resonance of the vocals sets the shadowy mood, while the guitar sparkles and spars for equal billing. Easily danceable and even easier on the ears, “My Redemption” is pure darkwave goodness and definitely has that European sensibility. One might say a cool touch that burns the skin, so you might want to catch up with Christine Plays Viola, and check out the vintage gothic video for “MyRedemption.”
“ColdHeart” is the debut single from VoxUmbra, a darkwave project started in 2025 by Tiffany in Seattle, USA and Florian from Amiens, France. A song for those who want to lose themselves in an ancient forest and live with the sprites, for the world of men can be cruel.
Tiffany’s vocals are the first to gift our ears, with a lilting quality that adds to the romantic ambient quality of the music. Like in a dream, Florian chimes in with the vocalised lament of the psychological damage done. Both singers are mesmerising in the way they compliment each other.
The accompanying video is beautifully made with pagan/wiccan overtones. The feminine is delicate and otherworldly, while the masculine is more forceful, yet questioning, but what ever is happening, you are focused utterly on the singers of VoxUmbra. The music itself is simply there floating in the background for atmosphere. The debut “ColdHeart” is a magical darkwave introduction to VoxUmbra.
Last year we were introduced to the young talented guitarist called Ja’kob, from Norway. Some of this talent comes from his equally skilled father, Karl Morten Dahl, otherwise known as Antipole. July saw the new single “Echoes,” featuring the vocals and lyrics of Portuguese darkwaver, Pedro Code of IAMTHESHADOW fame.
There is a delicate dance of the guitars as they interplay, reverberating and bouncing to the electronic beats, graceful in tone. Speaking of tone, the shivers are multiplied by hearing Code’s deep baritone, almost sliding in under the guitars, and they are deliciously sonorous.
“Echoes” speaks of things that happened in the past, like spectres of past regrets and choices made, that are still felt to this day. I don’t think I have heard anything put out by Antipole that I didn’t like, and “Echoes” is no different. The care and time put into this track can be sensed in your bones. Also there is something timeless about “Echoes” which translate well onto the dancefloor for this vast track from Antipole, Ja’kob and PedroCode.
Based in California is the project Pieti, a collaboration between musicians TheVandalorum (all instruments) and Krauhl (vocals and lyrics), where they create darkwave, influenced by dungeon synth. Their latest release is called WeddingPhotos, comprised of eight tracks.
The guitar work in “Martyr,” sparkles and flows in a gorgeous way, leaving you mesmerised by the simplistic joy it brings. The vocals definitely remind me of Interpol’sPaulBanks both in tone and pace, which are propelled by the lovely deep bass. The synths break through and there is something about this track that grabs your attention completely. Love can cause a person to do many things in order to gain for themselves “EternalBliss.” Again there is that great post-punk styled bass and the earnest vocals of Krauhl, as the song keeps the foot tapping along.
Another stand out track is “Reservation,” and it is a myriad of ideas and emotions. The lyrics, ‘Red leather, black tie‘ give the illusion of sexual temptation or tension, and within it, a lamentation that tugs at your heart. The luscious “CleverDisarray” is far more laid back and sinuous affair, that starts off with a recording of a woman, which is apparently how the females in a jail were communicating with each other, that belonged to TheVandal’s grandmother. The vocals and synths convey a defiance and sadness, plus that guitar has an almost Mediterranean feel.
The album was recorded between 2023 and 2025, and seems to draw from life and family, whether this is blood relations or the families we create, hence the title WeddingPhotos. The music itself is heavily rooted in post-punk and darkwave, with the rhythm held together by the bass and drums, while the guitar is just what makes it all perfect, equally important as the vocals in creating the atmosphere. The judicious use of synth just lends to the texture of each track. Pieti have dropped us a gem in WeddingPhotos.
MetropolisRecords dropped the single “Sharing Skin,” by NightRitualz on January 31st. Vincent Guerrero IV is Texas based NightRitualz and in March, his self titled debut album will be released. Interestingly he has coined the term ‘fuckwave‘ to describe his cauldron of mixed styles such as goth, electronic and EBM.
‘Fuck Wave’ is anything horny, erotic and sensual that just makes people feel good,” he explains. “I feel like my music puts people in that mood and allows them to just be themselves without judgement of any kind. Another reason is because, at the end of the day, ‘Fuck’ what everyone thinks. We only have one life, so spend it doing stuff you like and that makes you happy. I see it as an empowering term.‘ – Vincent Guerrero IV
A simple guitar and echoing fuzzed vocals greet you, haunting with the slow drawl, telling of a longing of the heart for another. Like a call to arms, the rhythm kicks in, speeding up the world around this track, and you can hear the delicate synths in the background twinkling. ‘Sharing skin and secrets‘ is cherishing those intimate moments whether that is sex or telling secrets they would never share with anyone else. NightRitualz understands that most people long for that attachment but also the fact that humans motivation comes from that which brings joy. I think the description fuck wave is very apt, for it is a dark and sexy serenade in the form of “Sharing Skin.”
As I write, California is on fire, and Vince Grant, the man behind LA project The Sea At Midnight, sent me an email about his new single, “Our Beautiful Destruction,” and all proceeds from the song will be donated to victims.
Was this track written before the fires? The vocals wrench at my insides with the lyrics about the world being consumed in flames and Grant’s voice is truly gorgeous and swept up in the whirling guitar and synths in the chorus.
‘burning so brightly against the night sky the ashes are raining sparks and ashes are all that’s left the smoke hides the pain of all that remains of our brilliant destruction our brilliant destruction smoke hides the pain‘
My heart aches listening to this track. I live in a country where every Summer is a terrifying wait to see if bush fires will take hold…. the last huge infernos being in 2019. Lost lives, lost property, watching both wildlife and domestic animals perishing. “Our BrilliantDestruction” sadly seems to encapsulate this situation perfectly. If it were released without the LA fires, it would be considered a evocative song, but currently it means everything. It is name your price on The Sea At Midnight’s Bandcamp, so I encouraged you to give a little to help in “Our Brilliant Destruction.”
Antipole, aka Karl Morten Dahl, from the currently frozen land of Norway, and ParisAlexander of the not quite as cold UK, have just released a new single. This post-punk/coldwave track is called “Sad Lover(Desolated),” and I am not sure if this ties into anything, about seven years ago, they had another song called “Shadow Lover.”
My breath slows as I take in the drum machine beats with the bass guitar’s deep rumbling, which is old school post-punk in the style of PeterHook (JoyDivision), drawing you in. The lead guitar work is seriously sublime, and delicately echoes, supported by the equally lightly winding synths. Alexander’s vocals are smooth and subdued, reeking of cooling dusk, and yet still intensely moving.
The music video is shot between the snowy pine forests of Norway, and an old church in England, with an attached graveyard. This heightens the stark reality of loneliness and inevitable death, but it also pulls into focus that “Sad Lover (Desolated)” is also about realising that snow covered scenery is beautiful, or that there is an austere dark peace around the tombstones of those long gone. It is finding the elegance and grace in that which could be seen as desolate. Antipole & Paris Alexander have delivered another perfect track in “Sad Lover (Desolated).”
Neo-industrial project Divine Shade is close to releasing their album Fragments Vol. 1, and from this debut, Remi Thonnerieux has dropped the latest single, “Hate and Oblivion. “
Reverberating electronics, tinged with feedback kick off with quirky interluding loops. This is leading you to the juicy chorus which is both ground out with Thonnerieux’s vocals and yet, still, the guitar and synths have a capacity to make you feel like you are soaring above everything. There is even a sneaky break where you think “Hate and Oblivion” has suddenly stopped.. but do not be fooled!
Divine Shade has toured with GaryNuman and it undeniable that his influence can be heard on “Hate andOblivion.” This track is instantly likeable and indeed familiar in a way, but that might be in part to the retro ambience. Between Thonnerieux’s vocals and the rich synths, DivineShade have absolutely served up an epic dark industrial track in “Hate and Oblivion.”
Aaargh, I am running late and I need to show you a single from Bologna band The Peripheries! Out on Three Hands Records, “Colder Than Your Smile” came out in the beginning of June, from members Wiz (vocals), Udo (bass), Flaminia (the monster from the north), Giorgia (visuals), Morgana (beats, tailoring) and Arnar (guitars, keys, vocals). By the way, Flaminia sounds uber cool, like she is a wildling.
The track is doused in a pall of electronic fuzz, and the synths run wistfully, much lighter giving a great contrast to the wonderfully deep bass. Wiz is the lead vocalist here and his performance makes you feel all the one sided love whilst wearing all the cruelty.
The incongruency of the electronics and guitars is really great, kind of a throw-back to the early 2000s EBM music. I really like The Peripheries style and “Colder Than Your Smile” is brilliantly dark and a delight to listen to.
The saying is the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and this could be said for young Norwegian guitarist Ja’kob, son of yet another amazing guitarist Karl Morten Dahl, better known as Antipole. They have joined forces with PedroCode, from IAMTHESHADOW, to release the single “Walk With Me.”
Ja’kob
PedroCode has a voice that could make you melt with it’s luscious tones and his contribution of vocals and lyrics sits so very well in the guitar laden music being laid down. Those guitars roll and play around each other in a mesmerising dance, which is beautiful to behold.
The music video is set between a Norwegian forest and a shuttered room, a play of light versus dark, of open spaces in contrast to the claustrophobic setting Code finds himself in. “Walk With Me” is delicate and at the same time sombre with the smooth deep intonations of Code. Antipole is a man that can make a guitar speak volumes and I can also see a long career in the music industry for Ja’kob,
